What is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is an internationally licensed school curriculum designed to develop open-minded and well-rounded students.
The IB curriculum was first introduced in the 1960s and has helped establish an internationally standardized school graduation curriculum. Since its beginnings, it has evolved into a K-12 program dedicated to academic and personal growth.
The IB offers four programs for students aged 3 to 19. The most popular of these is the IB Diploma Programme (DP), a two-year “university preparatory” program that students begin in their penultimate year of high school. Students who complete this program will receive the world-renowned IB Diploma, paving the way for admission to some of the world’s top universities!
You can choose the DP as an alternative to a high school qualification, which could be GCSE, A Levels, AP, HSC, VCE or NCEA, depending on where you are based.
To take this course you must be attending an IB approved school. These schools have teachers specially trained to teach the IB Diploma Programme. There are currently about 5,600 IB-certified schools in 159 countries, and Hong Kong accounts for about 70 of them.
While this article focuses primarily on the Diploma Program, the IB also has programs for primary and secondary students.
